Ask her how she stocks Mc & Co, the under-the-radar home
furnishings and accessories boutique in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and the
French-born decorative painter Corinne Gilbert will blithely reply, I
just go to my friends. Her best buds in Paris, Catherine Lvy and
Sigolne Prbois, the team behind Ts & Ts Associes, give Gilbert
access to their entire range of tableware and lighting (including their
asymmetrical black goblets). Justin Giunta the founder of Subversive
Jewelry, who served as Gilberts assistant before becoming the current
darling of costume-jewelry collectors will unveil his foray into lamp
design at Mc & Co this fall. Jagged white ceramic vases appear
courtesy of Joan Bankemper. There are new discoveries, too, like
Sylvain Willenzs delicate arboreal light sculpture and Casey
OConnors glasses with nature-study decals la Albertus Seba. Gilbert
has also chipped in, designing the chicest tarp totes on either side of
the Atlantic. What a pal! 57 North Sixth Street; (718) 388-3551. |

Mc
& Co is an outstanding home and style boutique in Williamsburg,
Brooklyn that Page and Shane have been raving about for months. (Check
out Shane'sblog about Mc & Co from March.)
They are constantly inspired by owner Corinne Gilberts eye for
outstanding design in both the products she sells and the store
displays she creates. If you are in the NYC area, and want to be
inspired you should definitely swing by.
So
when Page was asked about a particularly interesting necklace she often
wears no one was surprised to discover her source was Mc & Co. The
necklace in question is composed of insanely fun, brightly colored
rubber bands, and is an instant conversation starter. It combines the
idea of simple childhood pastimes (discovering multiple uses for office
supplies like making paper clip into jewelry and enjoying rubber
cements transcendent fumes) with high art.
|
But
Page bought it for a different reason: I was attracted to this
necklace at MC&Co because I collect rubber bands. Plus, I love the
modern, graphic and colorful pattern it creates when you wear it with
black or white. While wed like to give the artist who created it
credit, Page informs us that Gilbert has lost touch with the artist and
is hoping she will surface. Apparently the unnamed artist made a few
necklaces for her and then disappeared, says Page. Lookd like we'll
just have to make them for ourselves... |

Leo
and I were strolling around Williamsburg this weekend doing some
holiday shopping when we came across my new favorite shop. Mc&Co is
a small new shop located at 57 North 6th Street. Its a wonderful
collection of home and personal objects. Everything has a very warm but
pleasantly reserved feeling. It was so refreshing to step into a store
full of beautiful things which I had never seen before. These days so
many shops carry the same brands, but this store is absolute bliss.
This shop was opened in September in by Corinne Gilbert, who is one of
the most pleasant shop owners Ive come across in a while. I advise all
of you in the NY area to make the trip out there, I assure you will be
as delighted as I am to have found it! |

Every
once in a while, I walk into a shop and all hell breaks loose. I may
seem calm on the outside, but secretly, smoke blows out of my ears and
radiant beams glare from my eyes in excitement. This happened a few
months ago when I came across Mc&Co. I was casually walking in
Brooklyn just before sunset when I saw a subtle glow coming from a
storefront on North 6th Street. Upon closer inspection, I could make
out some silhouettes of gorgeous, outrageously composed ceramic
sculptures. Corinne Gilbert, who opened the store last fall, has a
curatorial eye for eccentric-yet-understated curiosities from
independent designers. She does not attend trade fairs and carries only
heartfelt items created by people she considers friends. She also sells
bags, mirrors, lamps, and pillows under her own Mc&Co label. Anyone
who has been a longtime fan of Ts & Ts from France will be thrilled to hear that she carries almost the entire line. You should also be sure to check out Joan Bankemper, and then stay a while. You'll find yourself revisiting items over and over again. |
